Healing Crits
I coined the term “Healing Crit” in 2017 while I was working on ways to work with artists who were looking to improve their work. As an artist from a family of artists, I learned early about how cruel the world of art can treat individual artists. I developed Healing Crits as a way to counter the harm that some traditional critiques can inflict on artists who are just trying to do their best.
Unlike traditional critiques, where artwork can be criticized harshly, there is no criticism of the actual artwork in a Healing Crit and the artist’s well-being is centered.
You can book me to conduct Healing Crits for your art students or community arts group. Please contact me to learn more.
…With Anxiety Workshop Series
The …With Anxiety Series is a new group of virtual workshops that I’ve created in 2021 for LGBTQ+ artists who struggle with their art practice due to anxiety. I was diagnosed with Anxiety in 2008 and I’ve spent most of my life navigating visual art and performance with this mental illness.
Though I am not a mental health expert, I use what I have learned from my personal experiences as an artist and arts administrator to assist fellow anxious artists through the aspects of their practice that might trigger feelings of anxiety.
The series includes:
- Grant Writing with Anxiety
- Portfolio Building with Anxiety
- Teaching Art with Anxiety
- Arts Administration with Anxiety
I also offer these as one-on-one meetings for anyone whose anxiety might make it difficult to attend group workshops.
Contact me to register for an upcoming workshop or schedule a one-on-one.
Beauchêne Lecture
Created in 2018, the Beauchêne Lecture is named for the scientist, Edmé François Chauvot de Beauchêne, who invented the disarticulated, or exploded, skull as an educational tool to teach the parts of the human skull.
My Beauchêne Lecture is 50% lecture, 50% performance, and 100% a dive into the social constructs of how expectations of power dynamics show up at the intersection of art and education.
Much like a Beauchêne skull, the Beauchêne Lecture has all the parts of a traditional college lecture, just… exploded :)
I have done Beauchêne Lectures at Bryn Mawr College, Haverford College, Moore College of Art, and Pratt Institute. Send me a message to book me for a lecture.
